Welcome to PS 9!

PS 9 is an open choice elementary school with a strong focus on the arts. The PTA at PS 9 is committed to encouraging parents to use their "VOICE" (Vision, Opportunity, Independence, Collaboration, Expression) to create meaningful opportunities for students, staff and families.
As a result, we provide a variety of school, community and family activities that not only engage children and families, but build a community as well.
We look forward to providing our families with many meaningful opportunities throughout the school-year.

DANCE-A-THON FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Dance-a-Thon?
A dance-a-thon is a party where students secure pledges of money and then spend the evening dancing as much as they can!
How is PS 9’s Dance-a-thon unique?
At PS 9, instead of getting donations per dance (10 cents, 25 cents, one dollar per dance, etc.), we encourage donors to give a flat donation. Every child who is dancing for money will get a pledge card that they wear around their neck. Parents will give stickers to each dancer at the end of each song to keep track of how many songs they were able to dance to. All students and families are encouraged to dance, regardless of whether they secured pledges.
Will there be food available? Will it cost money?
Yes, refreshments will be available for purchase. We will be asking our families to bring in baked goods to sell.
I’m free on Friday, February 6th and would love to volunteer! Whom should I contact to sign up and ask questions about the support that is needed that day?
Thanks for volunteering! Jackie Ventrudo and Joy Laczynski are leading the charge for day-of volunteers. Contact them via e-mail at
ariel12201978@gmail.com or jlac1018@yahoo.com.
What are the volunteer activities that I can help with on the day of the Dance-a-Thon?
There are several fun and simple ways you can help make this event a success:
§  Help us decorate. Set up is from 2 – 5 pm.
§  Help clean up after the event. Cleanup is from 8:30-9:30 pm.
§  Be a dance- sticker- giver. As a sticker-giver, you will be the single most popular person in the universe- surrounded by kids who want your attention. Stickers are given during the entire event.
§  Help distribute refreshments in the PS 9 Snack Shack from 6 – 7:30 pm
§  Make homemade sweet treats that we can sell for dessert. Please drop off your contribution at the PS 9 Snack Shack when you arrive at the event.
Should I reach out to friends and extended family members to donate?
Yes! Each child at PS 9 has a group of adults who love and care about their education—Please consider asking your extended family to help support our school. If mailing in a donation, be sure to include the donor’s name and the child’s name with the donation. Checks can be made payable to PTA of PS9, and sent to PS 9 PTA 1055 Targee Street, Staten Island, NY 10304.
What should I aim for in pledges?
We’d be thrilled if every student could raise $20 from friends and family. We understand that some families can raise more, others less—please just do what you can.
If we are unable to secure pledges, can we still participate?
Of course! Everyone in the PS 9 community is welcome regardless of whether they secure pledges. Please join us for a great night to celebrate our community!
Can I get a copy of the pledge form?
Sure! You can download it here:
Dance-a-Thon Pledge Sheet
Can I turn in my pledges before the event?
Yes, it’s very helpful to have the pledges before the event because it helps us to get everyone dancing as quickly as possible. You can send your pledges and pledge sheet into school in your child’s purple folder. Return the pledges and the completed pledge sheet in the envelope provided to you by the PTA, or in an envelope labeled, “DANCE-A-THON.”
What if I can’t dance?
Not to worry. The lights will be turned down low and the room will be filled with kids doing what feels natural. Whatever kind of dancer you are, you’ll fit right in.
I’ve heard mention of prizes. What can people win and how?
The classes that have the most participation get a class party!
