Our chili cook off was a crowd favorite during last year's Pumpkin Smash. If you have a great recipe, if you're the family's go-to chili connoisseur, then this is the event for you!

Pumpkin Smash
PS 9 will be hosting its 2nd Annual Pumpkin Smash city wide event, taking place on November 7th from 11 am to 3 pm at our school! This is a borough-wide event that all schools and community members are invited to. We will be partnering with the NYC Compost Project hosted by Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden to celebrate our garden program, keep hundreds of pounds of compostable material out of landfills, and provide compost education to our families and the greater community.
During Pumpkin Smash, you and your children are invited to bring your left over halloween pumpkins for smashing, launch pumpkins with our custom made catapult, create crafts and works of art, get your face painted, enjoy bouncy houses and slides, play carnival games, and enjoy refreshments--including our chili cook off! This will be a wonderful event and we hope all our families (and their friends) will be able to come and enjoy!

Harvest Days
PS 9 has partnered with Garden to Cafe, a program of the NYC Department of Education, Office of School Food, and a partner in Grow to Learn, the Citywide School Garden Initiative. The program connects school gardening and school lunch through seasonal harvest events and educational activities.
We are excited to be one of few city schools chosen by Garden to Cafe to participate in a new pilot program, which brings harvest events to our school multiple times throughout the year. Our first "harvest day" will take place on Friday, October 16th, during the school day, when Garden to Cafe staff will integrate school gardening with school lunch. Although this is NOT a family event, we encourage you use this as an opportunity to talk with your children about healthy lifestyle choices in regards to food and nutrition.

Membership Dues
As a
new organization, the PTA of PS 9 is excited to establish and build upon
traditions that our children and families will come to love. PTA
membership dues provide our PTA with funds needed to offer our children various
programs and activities throughout the school year. The suggested
donation is $5.00 per family.
Donations can be made electronically through the New York Charities PS 9
donation page. Click the big purple DONATE button on the right.
Thank you for your contribution and support!
Getting Involved
Our PTA is a volunteer-driven organization
that strives to bring meaningful activities to the students and families at PS
9. We need your help and support to continue to function successfully. There
are
many opportunities to get involved this year. Joining a
committee is a wonderful way to become an active and vital member of the
school. If you are interested in joining and/or chairing a committee,
please return the backpacked tear-off to school as soon as possible. If you
would like more information before committing, please reach out to the EC
Committee liaison. Our first committee meeting will take place on a date TBA in
October.

Class Parents Needed!
School staff and PTA utilize Class Parents for
many purposes throughout the year. It is a very important role in our school
community. If you are interested in becoming a class parent,
please review the
roles and responsibilities section of the handout. If you would like to make this year long commitment, please
return the tear-off to the PTA no later than October 1st.
Girl Scout Registration
PS 9 will continue our Girl Scout Troops this
year, but will split into two separate groups Daisies (Gr K-1)
and Brownies (Gr2). Meetings will be held twice a month on Monday's
Daisies from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Brownies from 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm. The
first meeting will be held on Monday, October 5, 2015.
Registration for the troop will take place on
Monday, September 28, 2015 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm at the PS 9 main entrance.
In an effort to be honest and fair, as well as follow Girl Scout Council
rule and regulations PS 9 Troop 5442 will accept girls in the following manner:
- Girls
who have previously participated in Girl Scout Troop 5442 will be given
first preference and must register on September 28, 2015 to secure
placement in the troop. If your daughter was previously in our troop
but will not be joining us this year, please notify us in writing as soon
as possible at PS9Troop5442@yahoo.com. Previously
registered families will be contacted regarding what they need to bring to
registration.
- All
other girls are welcome to join our waiting list by emailing the troop
with the following information:
- Participant
name, date of birth, grade, address, phone number
- Parent/guardian
name, address, phone number, email address
- Please
email us at PS9Troop5442@yahoo.com with the above
information in order to be put on the waiting list
- A
lottery will be held following registration to determine which girls from
the waiting list will be accepted into troop. Girls who are not
chosen will have a chance to join other Girl Scout Troops via placement by
the Girl Scout Council.
As per the Girl Scout Council, we are not allowed to exceed
certain leader-to-girl ratios. As much as we would love to have every girl
join, we must follow these rules. If you are interested and available to
be a leader or volunteer for our Girls Scout Troop, this will allow us to
welcome more girls. To inquire about becoming a leader or volunteer, please
email us at PS9Troop5442@yahoo.com.
